Comb boxes were used to store utensils for combing and decorating hair. This comb box is comprised of one long drawer in each of the upper and lower sections, with two drawers fitted in the middle. The top is decorated with flower designs, while the ox-horn plates are ornamented with a phoenix, flower, deer, pine tree, plum flower, and a variety of flowering plants. The ox-horn plates were made using a traditional Korean decorative technique in which ox-horn is flattened into paper-thin half-transparent plates with patterns drawn on the inner side mineral dye. These plates were then attached to items made from wood or bamboo.
