The form of this celadon pillow looks resembles those used during the Song Dynasty of China, but it is in fact much more sophisticated. Excluding the underside, the pillow is densely decorated with lotus flower and peony designs. The peony design was carved in semi-relief by applying a carving knife held in a horizontal manner. An openwork lotus design composed of a lotus flower and leaves can be seen on the wide round sides with scroll designs carved in relief above and below the lotus.
