This painting depicts snow falling from the sky at night into a river, eliciting an icy chill in the viewer. The contrast between the dark sky and the snow-covered mountain intensifies the atmosphere created by the wintry landscape. Yi Jing, who worked in the 17th century, followed An Gyeon’s school of painting while at the same time devising a unique style for himself. Compared to the An Gyeon school, Yi’s painting exudes a much softer feeling, as shown in his method of expressing the tip of a leaf by making dots with a standing brush rather than drawing needle-like lines.
