This painting is also known as Gima Dogangdo, literally meaning “Crossing the River on Horseback,” since it portrays a party of five people mounted on horses crossing a frozen river against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains and streams. The signature in the upper right of the painting reads “Ikjae,” the pen-name of Yi Je-hyeon, whose seal is also stamped below the signature. In terms of color, it resembles Cheonsan Daeryeopdo (Painting on the Grand Hunt on the Heavenly Mountain), which was presumably painted by King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty. However, the theme and descriptive style are more similar to Chulietu (Painting of a Hunt) by Liu Gwandao of the Yuan Dynasty (c. late 13th century to early 14th century). These similarities indicate that it might have been made in the same period. This work is highly significant in that it demonstrates the painting style and trends of the late Goryeo Dynasty, remaining examples of which are scarce.
