The Chinese characters at the top-right of this painting explain that it is a portrait of Im Gyeong-eop, a renowned general of the late Joseon period. He is wearing a blue ceremonial robe, an official hat, and a belt. A portrait that shares several similarities with this one is currently designated as municipal tangible cultural heritage of Chungju and is kept at a shrine for Im Gyeong-eop in that city. Interestingly, the National Museum of Korea also has a portrait which is assumed to depict Im Gyeong-eop (accession no. Deoksu 6290), but the figure in that portrait wears attire of the Qing Dynasty and the face is very different from the one portrayed here.
