This is a rubbed copy of the epitaph on the Five-story Stone Pagoda at the Jeongnimsa Temple site in Sabi (present-day Buyeo), the former capital of Baekje. It is believed to have been made after Tang China’s destruction of Baekje in 660 (the 7th year of the reign of King Muyeol of Silla). The epitaph concerns the fall of Sabi at the hands of the allied Silla/Tang forces and relates how the King of Baekje and his retainers were taken as hostages. The fact that this epitaph about the fall of Baekje was inscribed on a structure within a temple located in the middle of the kingdom’s former capital attests to the catastrophe faced by the fallen dynasty.
