Sir Iuhchi Isao (井內功, 1911~1992), a Japanese doctor, came to be interested in Korean roof tiles from his childhood present from his uncle, an animal patterned roof tile from Unified Silla. Later, he prepared the Iuhchi Isao ancient culture study room in his house to study
Korean roof tiles and bricks and published many papers. In 1987, he donated 1,082 pieces of roof tiles and bricks from his collection to the National Museum of Korea with a view to enhance the friendly relations between Korea and Japan. The roof times and bricks encompass
the entire period from Nakrang, Three Kingdoms, and Unified Silla to Goryeo, and Joseon Dynasty and indispensible resources in studying the development history of Korean roof tiles and bricks. The large number of donated items came from Unified Silla and it also includes
sizable rare roof tiles and bricks from Goguryeo and Nakrang that could not be easily accessed from regions in South Korea.
